“River Canyon”…in the Mekong River
The landscape on the bank of the Mekong River from Sam Phan Bok, Khemarat district to “Sop Mun”
-- the confluence of the Mun and Mekong Rivers, located in Khong Chiam district, Ubon Ratchathani Province,
is characterized as a “river cliff” or “canyon”. In the past, when the Mekong River was flowing through the east end of Phu Phan Mountain, its
erosion caused a long steep canyon along the river. Meanwhile, the uplift of land occurred at almost the same rate as water erosion.
This area is located in Pha Taem National Park, Khong Chiam district and Si Muang Mai district, Ubon Ratchathani Province.
The paintings at Pha Taem on the bank of Mekong River were estimated to be at least 3,000 years old.
They were painted on the inwards cliff walls with protruding upper edge acting as a shelter that has protected the paintings from the rain.
As a result; they are durable and have stayed in good condition until now.
