the Pan-pan Kingdom
Ao Ban Don is on the Gulf of Thailand coast after the Kra Isthmus.
It is a u-shaped inlet where clusters of islands such as Angthong and
Samui act as breakwaters against tidal waves and winds from the Gulf of
Thailand. Here, the Tapi River has brought with it small particles which
have settled on the bottom of the gulf and created delta making it fertile
and a crucial pier of the Gulf of Thailand. Thus, settlements have existed
since before the Buddhist Era and have lasted until today. A number of old
archaeological artifacts and ruins were found in places around the Gulf.
These places are Khao Phun-phin, Wat Maha That in the Chaiya inlet and
the Singkhon Cave in Amphoe Khiri-rattanikhom. Scholars of archaeological
N history believed that these places used to be center of the Pan-pan
Kingdom. Based on the Chinese archives from the Tang Dynasty,
this area had been glorious in B.E. 1400s, and continued
6 km. to develop in Srivijaya time.
