The purpose of the operations function
Sustainability in operations
management
Companies are beginning to consider how their operations affect the environment
and future generations.
Sustainable development is about meeting the needs of the
present without compromising the ability of future generations to
meet their own needs.
Operations management may contribute to achieving organisational sustainability in
a number of ways:
Process design, e.g. designed to minimise waste.
Product design, e.g. use of recycled inputs.
Supply chain management, e.g. choose suppliers that adopt sustainable
development policies.
Quality management should help to improve efficiency and reduce waste.
