THE JAZZ SIPPER
After traveling throughout Europe and living in Atlanta an international city,
New Orleans seemed much smaller than he remembered. The city looked
different to Vance. But he could tell that the city was still sassy and had much
attitude to make up for it size. Aunt Jessie use to tell him it’s not the size of
the dog in the fight, but the size of the fight in the dog. Vance knew New
Orleans could take own any city and would probably win because New
Orleans have a lot of fight in it.
When Vance got to the hospital, it was about 2:50 pm New Orleans time.
When Aunt Jessie saw Vance she rushed to embrace him as he did her,
Vance held Aunt Jessie tight and just rocked her from side to side all the while
saying it’s going to be all right. Vance asked about Uncle Frank’s condition,
Aunt Jessie told Vance Uncle Frank was out of surgery, but he was in ICU.
And he still was not breathing on his own but the next 24 to 48 hours will be
touch and go. Then Aunt Jessie broke down, Vance held her and was trying
to be strong, but he felt himself swelling up. Once they were able to regain
their composure they walked back to the waiting room and joined a group of
Aunt Jessie’s church sisters. They were ready to stand vigil with her
throughout the night. Also, a group of Uncle Frank’s co-workers and friends
had been coming by to check on Uncle Frank. Mr. Ramous was coordinating
everything. He was meeting and greeting everyone and really was being there
for Aunt Jessie. Making sure Aunt Jessie was ok. Vance greeted him and told
him thanks for helping Aunt Jessie out. Mr. Ramous told Vance that was not
just his best friend in there hooked up to those machines that was more of a
brother than any real brother he had. So, no thanks or anything else was
needed. Because, he was not doing any more than Uncle Frank would being
doing for him and his family if it was him lying in there. Vance understood that
