THE JAZZ SIPPER
Vance told her that his Uncle Frank had suffered a major heart attack earlier
that day and that he was upstairs in ICU, in critical but stable condition. Regina
gave Vance her deepest sympathy and asked Vance how his Aunt Jessie was
holding up. Vance said she was doing as well as was expected and that she
was upstairs with some of her church sisters and some of her and Uncle Frank
friends. Vance asked, so what’s happening with your dad? I saw him before
he went into the back. Regina said, after his heart attack he loss partial use
of his body on his left side. So, he has been in rehab ever since it happened.
Vance asked, he has been in rehab for three years? Oh no, Regina said he
had a second heart attack about a year ago. He went back to work too soon
after his first heart attack and did not follow his doctor’s orders to retire. I have
been coming back and forth from Atlanta on the weekends to help my parents
out. Vance said are you serious, you live in Atlanta. Yes, Regina said, why
are you asking if I am serious about living in Atlanta? Because, I live in Atlanta
Vance said. But, I thought you lived in Virginia, Regina said. Vance told her
that after leaving the Navy, he had moved to Atlanta and had been living there
for the last four years. Also, he had just received his Marketing Business
Degree from Georgia State University. What about you? Vance asked Regina.
Well I graduated from Columbia University and I am in my last year of law
school at Emory University School of Law. Vance smiled and said you know
we have a lot to catch up on. Regina said, yes we do.
Vance told Regina that he would be at the hospital the rest of the night.
And, if her current relationship status would allow her to make a call, to call
the ICU desk once she got her father settled in at home. Regina smiled and
said I will go one better if your relationship status would allow it, how about
after I get my father back home and settled in I come back and sit with you
