                 THE JAZZ SIPPER

     Chapter Fifteen-----Take Five

Here it was June 18th, 1988, almost one year to the date he and Raheem
went to New York. An event that they would constantly laugh about;
thinking back on how they had been out of the street life and both knowing
how their street life skillsets had diminished. They even laughed at the
corny stuff that they were saying to each other. Like when Raheem said,
“to the last breath I got your back Vance”. Vance would ask where you
heard that at, in a movie somewhere. And when Vance told him if any
dirty work have to be done that he will do it, Raheem would say “now that
is a movie line all the way Vance.” They would laugh at each other even
more. Even though he and Regina were to be married in about eleven
weeks and she had been driving him crazy with all the details, he did not
mind. He dealt with it all; knowing that he was about to be a proud father.
Vance felt like he was on break and the business was pretty much on
automatic, he felt that he had to rest a little. For some strange reason he
began really listing to The Dave Brubeck Quartet more and more
especially the jazz cut "Take Five" which was a jazz piece written by Paul
Desmond and performed by The Dave Brubeck Quartet on their 1959
album Time Out. The piece became one of the group's best-known
records, famous for its distinctive, catchy saxophone melody and use of
the unusual quintuple (5/4) time, from which its name is derived.

    He began thinking about Lil Babu being nine years old now, and how
nice he played the saxophone and the trumpet, Vance was determined
to keep him in music and help him to become a top Jazz Musician. And,
it seemed to be working because Lil Babu would come alive when he
played his instruments. It was Lil Babu’s idea to play two solos at Vance
