average human being is supposed to consume about 2,000 calories a day –
more if you’re a big man, less if you’re a very petite woman.

Let’s discuss this for a moment. Depending on your weight, age, body size
and gender, you burn about 1 calorie every minute while you sleep. Cool
hey? This is because obviously the medulla oblongata portion of the brain is
still instructing the nerves to pull the intercostal muscles open and closed so
that the lungs can function – and this takes energy. The heart is also still
beating, and the cells are carrying out their work to keep your body alive.

So let’s assume you’re a man and you burn 2,400 calories a day. That’s about
40 apples, but it’s only 2 Spur burgers, spread over breakfast, lunch and
dinner – and that excludes the chips, onion rings and the Coke. Remember
        “Supersize Me?”

In our circles, we work from what we call the resting metabolic rate (RMR),
which is how many calories you burn a day without exercise. If you consume
more than you burn, you gain weight – and that extra pound is one of the
most insidious things in the world. It sneaks up on you when you least expect
        – or want – it.
