College Security
Tutors and the Duty Tutor
Resident Tutors perform ‘Duty’ on a rostered basis. When a Resident Tutor is rostered on as the
the role of Duty Tutor, they will carry the emergency contact phone (the ‘duty phone’) with them.
When on Duty, they are responsible for the security of the College and the wellbeing of the students
during the hours when the College Office is closed. In this, they are supported by the Principal, the
Deputy Principal, and all other staff. Duty Tutors are rostered nightly from 5pm until 9am the next
morning on weekdays, and all day on Saturdays and Sundays.
The roster of Duty Tutors is posted on the notice board in the front foyer opposite the College Office
and is also accessible via the JCH Information SharePoint.. Please note that Duty Tutors are only to
be contacted for legitimate concerns – for example, if noise levels are too high, if you lock yourself
out of your room, or in genuine emergencies. Please note:
Lock Out Calls (new in 2025)
Residents are expected to take personal responsibility for keeping their fob and key in their
possession at all times. While the Duty Tutor may be called for building and/or room lock
outs after hours (5pm-9am weekdays, or anytime on weekends), an $85 charge will be
incurred for every call after TWO or more occurrences that year. This fee will not be incurred
for the first two calls per resident. This is to provide a clear incentive to all residents to take
personal responsibility for their fob and key. There is no charge to request one's room to be
unlocked during office hours via the front office.
Guidelines for students needing help after hours
Resident Tutors have jobs, are studying for PhDs, or working in laboratories and have sporting, social
and family lives outside of College. They share the Duty Roster and on-call responsibilities. So please
consider the following before phoning the Duty Tutor:
1. Is this urgent? Can it wait until morning?
2. Could you call a friend, family member or senior student/ exec member?
3. Duty Tutors can contact Senior Staff for back up if there are weekend emergencies
4. Duty Tutors, the Deputy Principal and Dean of Studies are trained in Physical and Mental
Health first aid
5. If you are not sure, consider calling Nurse on Call (physical health) or Unimelb After Hours
Crisis Support (mental health support)
6. Call Duty Tutor and Ambulance if recommended
7. Keep College posted
If there is a serious health emergency, do not hesitate to contact Emergency services first. Please
contact the Duty Tutor immediately after calling for help or ask another student to contact the Duty
Tutor.
