Locking doors
To ensure the safety and security of all, the external gates and doors are locked 24hrs a day with
the exception of the front door which is open during business hours.
As the College cannot accept responsibility for your private belongings, you are strongly
encouraged to insure them. Your bedroom door is the front door to your home; so, keep it locked,
even during short absences such as going to the bathroom or dining hall. If by any chance you
have locked yourself out of your room during office hours, the Office Manager can open your door
for you.
In the evenings and during the weekends, a master key is held by the Duty Tutor. It is important for
your personal safety as well as the security of your possessions that you keep your door locked when
sleeping in your room. Valuables such as money, jewellery, cameras and personal computer
equipment should never be left unattended in the public rooms of the College. Please make sure
that all external doors to the College are kept closed and locked at all times so as not to jeopardise
everyone’s safety.
When you are entering or leaving College through the main pedestrian gate, please be aware of
anybody trying to enter behind you without a FOB key. If you do not recognise them as a member
of our College community, you should feel empowered to politely ask them who they are and why
they are entering / who they are coming to see. If you feel uneasy about someone who has entered
after you, please inform the Office Manager or the Duty Tutor out of hours.
External door key
All external doors and the front pedestrian gate are linked to a computer which locks and unlocks
these doors automatically. Access to the building can be gained at any time using your external
door key (FOB). These FOB keys are individually numbered and registered in the computer, and are
your responsibility.
You can always leave by these doors when they are locked; you exit by just turning the handle. The
only exceptions are:
● The front door after hours: you need to press the large white button to the left of the doors.
● The front pedestrian gate: you need to press the green button to the left of the gate. This
gate opens automatically. Please do not push or pull this gate.
When you leave College for the mid-year break and at the end of the year, you are required to
return your keys to the College Office. The use of College facilities is not permitted during the
summer break.
