P. 8
1.-Mitosis: produces two identical cells
2.-Meiosis: occurs only in sex cells
Male gametes.-Sperms
Female gametes.- Ova
D) Cell Cycle
1.- Interphase. During this phase, the cell grows and carries on its usual
metabolic activities.
2. Mitosis (M phase)
Mitosis is the splitting of one mother cell into two identical daughter cells.
Four phases of mitosis: prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase.
A) Prophase. Chromatin threads coil and shorten so the chromosomes
appear.
B) Metaphase. - Chromosomes cluster and become alienated at the
metaphase plate.
C) Anaphase. -The centromeres that held the chromatids together split. The
chromatids begin to move slowly apart toward opposite end of the cells.
D) Telophase. - During
this phase chromosome at opposite ends of the cell uncoils to become
threadlike chromatin again. The spindle breaks down and disappears, a
nuclear envelope form from each chromatin mass, and a nucleoli appear in
each of the daughter nuclei.
