Page 76 - Fallen Thoughts
P. 76

My body shakes as I sob and I close my eyes begging for the pain to stop.

The salt stings the cuts on my face. Just because I know letting her go is right,

doesn’t mean it doesn’t hurt me. My lungs scream for air that I can’t reach.

A hand brushes against my shoulder and I flinch away. I look up and see

               Meagan.

I try to suck in some air, “I- Wha- You-?”

Meagan shakes her head at me to stop me from stammering. She places her

hands gently on my cheeks, “You need to breathe. Count with me.”

I gasp and try to steady my breathing. Meagan runs her hands through my

hair, counting softly for me, “In for four, hold for eight, out for eight. You know

               this Chels, c’mon.”

Eventually, when my breathing returns to normal, with only the occasional

hiccough, Meagan turns to the first aid kit she brought back with her, “Can I clean

               you up?”

I suck in another lungful of air and nod. My Meagan- no. Just, Meagan, is so

kind as to help her lying girlfriend who deserves to be dead, get cleaned up after

fighting a monster that almost destroyed the whole block.

She helps lift my shirt over my head and lets me pull off my pants while she

opens the first aid kit. When she turns back towards me, I’m in only my bra and

panties, and she’s blushing. My heart aches. I’m going to miss her.

Meagan and I have seen each other naked before, and it’s partly why she

knew I was keeping a secret. She found new scars that were too jagged and raw to

be old or explainable. I didn’t know what to say, so I would tell her not to worry
about it. My response just made her more determined to find out what I was hiding.

Meagan’s voice rings out in the otherwise silent apartment, “You fought that
               thing?”
