operating principles. Good enough, Elisha was a smart and
a spiritually discerning man. He did not allow his success at
the marketplace and boardroom to becloud his mind or put
a chip on his shoulders on how to relate to his mentor,
Elijah, who apparently had less material means. Elisha
related to Elijah as a father. He served him faithfully for
many years. He served and travelled with Elijah from city
to city until he earned the description as one “who poured
water on the hands of Elijah” (2 Kings 3:11).
Having descended from the socioeconomic mountaintop
to the valley of spiritual training and service for several
years, Elisha was positioned and ready to receive a double
portion of the grace that operated on his mentor’s life and
ministry. In other words, he served his way into grace. The
Bible records that he did double the exploits of his spiritual
leader, a proof that service with a right heart can connect a
saint with grace.
2. Joshua
Joshua is another person who cultivated a right heart in
service and connected with grace. He served faithfully
under his leader Moses for about 40 years. He followed
Moses everywhere. In fact, whenever Moses went before
the Lord, not only did Joshua accompany him, Joshua
would stay back even after his mentor had gone back home
(Exodus 33:11). When Moses went to the Mountain to
fellowship with God and to receive the Ten
Commandments, Joshua accompanied him. The text in
