GRACE, Exploring Its Riches
Exodus 24:12-14 says,
“Then the LORD said to Moses, “Come up to Me
on the mountain and be there; and I will give you
tablets of stone, and the law and commandments
which I have written, that you may teach them.”
So Moses arose with his assistant Joshua, and
Moses went up to the mountain of God. And he
said to the elders, “Wait here for us until we come
back to you. Indeed, Aaron and Hur are with you.
If any man has a difficulty, let him go to them.”
Joshua served Moses faithfully for decades without any
ulterior motives of recognition or succession. And when he
started serving his leader, Moses had his name changed
from Hoshea, meaning Salvation, to Joshua, meaning
Jehovah is Salvation. This was done without any fuss (see
Numbers 13:8, 16). Eventually the day of reckoning came.
God who had observed Joshua’s attitude and conduct over
the decades came to the point of choosing a successor to
Moses. He did not choose any of Moses’ children or any of
Aaron’s sons. God recommended the one who had served
his mentor and nation faithfully.
“Now the LORD said to Moses: “Go up into this
Mount Abarim, and see the land which I have
given to the children of Israel. And when you have
seen it, you also shall be gathered to your people, as
Aaron your brother was gathered. For in the
