that students who graduate meet the requirements in the following
                              five knowledge areas called KRDs:

                                 KRD 1: Scientific and Evidence Base of Practice – You can do
                                    research into dietetic topics and put the research into practice
                                    through projects, experiments, reports, and analysis.
                                 KRD 2: Professional Practice Expectations – You know how to com-
                                    municate with people, both in writing and verbally, in ways that
                                    help people create positive change. You follow ethical guide-

                                    lines and act like a professional.
                                 KRD 3: Clinical and Customer Services – You know the nutritional

                                    care process and can use it effectively to make decisions, iden-
                                    tify problems, diagnose solutions, implement, evaluate, and
                                    monitor situations. These are the core skills that distinguish a
                                    dietitian from other professionals.

                                 KRD 4: Practice Management and Use of Resources –It takes more
                                    than just understanding nutrition to be a dietitian. You need to
                                    be able to manage financial resources, and people; understand
                                    food service operations and food safety; follow public policy
                                    and regulations related to dietetics; follow regulations related
                                    to health care; and use the coding and billing of dietetics/nutri-
                                    tion services.

                                 KRD 5: Support Knowledge –You must have the core courses in
                                    foods science, organic chemistry, biology, psychology, sociology,
                                    etc. that serve as the foundation for dietetics.

                              Each area includes a list of competencies (CRD) that give the spe-
                              cific requirements you should be able to do as a dietitian. Being
                              able to classify your knowledge and skills into these five standard
                              areas is critical. Each work sample you include in your career portfo-
                              lio should show how you meet and exceed these standards. We will
                                                  ®
                              be using the ACEND standards as a way of categorizing work sam-
                              ples to document your abilities in the dietetic field. A listing of the

                              Resources section on page 183.
