they are connected to each other subtly and though the conscious mind has a very
limited power, it is capable of affecting and effecting the unlimited power of the
subconscious mind. The subconscious mind is connected to the conscious mind at one
end and is connected very subtly at the other end to the 'Divine Power with Divine
Intuition'. Let us at this stage try to briefly understand, how these two minds function
and play a very important role in shaping Man's life.
                                                        Conscious Mind
Let us first consider the conscious mind. All those activities which are performed
willfully and attentively through the human senses are essentially the actions of the
conscious mind. This mind primarily establishes contact with the external world and
gathers knowledge and information from it through the five sense organs and the five
organs of knowledge. If this mind is not attentive at the level of perception received
through these five organs of knowledge, it will fail to gather any information, though all
these five organs may be in good condition and functioning properly. How often we
experience that when we are deeply engrossed in our thoughts, we are totally unaware
of the events happening around us. For instance, a student deeply engrossed in his
studies, is totally unaware about his favourite song being played right in his presence on
the stereo system. This lack of comprehension is because of the absence of the conscious
mind to receive the perception through the concerned sense organ of hearing. Similar
processes also occur in the case of the rest of the sense organs. Another aspect in this
context is that, Man is happy when he receives favourable perceptions from the subjects
of his liking through these sense organs, while he becomes unhappy when he receives
unfavourable perceptions from the subjects he dislikes. Passions such as anger, greed,
temptations, pride, hatred are all unhealthy projections of the conscious mind, So also,
love, compassion, contentment, non-attachment, renunciation, humility and respect are
the healthy projections of this mind. All these projections of the conscious mind, leave
their deep impressions on the subconscious mind which become eventually responsible
for shaping Man's life. In deep slumber, this conscious mind is devoid of any awareness
and as such, it is incapable of receiving both favourable and unfavourable perceptions.
This void in experiencing the perceptions is mainly because of the non-attentiveness of
the conscious mind. This non-attentiveness of this mind can be due to its unawareness or
due to the mind being in the state of trance or due to the mind being in unison with the
divinity within. Thus, the worldly life is meaningful only when the conscious mind is
                                                                                                              26
