At this point in my life, I started buying property and selling it. I realized I
had a gift of design, which I then realized could be traced all the way back
to my childhood. When I was in sixth grade there was a contest for Miller's
Outpost, and I loved their fashion. As a kid I loved fashion even back then,
and I loved their selections since I was an athlete and loved sporty clothes.
At one point in my life, I just knew I would become a model and walk down
the runway in all of the beautiful clothes I saw in the fashion magazine.
Unfortunately, my brothers grew tall but not me, so I knew my dream of a
model’s life was not in the cards for me.
I entered the contest with a design of pants, which was exciting to me since
I wasn't allowed to wear pants until sixth grade. My dad was pretty old
fashioned and insisted that a little girl should look like a little girl, so I was
only allowed to wear dresses. Looking back on that time in my life I
remember being mortified in those dresses since I had to wear corrective
shoes and I thought they were just the ugliest thing on the planet. Having
to wear a dress emphasized them even more. Kids made fun of me, and all
I wanted to do was hide them or at least camouflage them a bit under a
pair of pants. At times, I resulted in sticking a pair of pretty patent leather
shoes in my school bag and switching them out when I got to school. My
feet killed me, but at least I wasn’t being made fun of. I didn’t win the
Miller’s Outpost contest, but I finished in the top 5.
After graduating from college, I was hired by Nabisco in a marketing role.
Even though I studied marketing in college, working in the field, I soon
found, was not for me. I took several other jobs after Nabisco, but I found
my niche when I got a job working for Sebastian. I worked on the
marketing side, but this was different than my previous marketing position,
as now I was surrounded by cutting edge fashion and trendy hair design.
