Autobiography of Kitman Shum
Life is an adventurous journey. My adventure started in 1986 when I came
to Los Angeles from Hong Kong. Thirty years later, I am the owner of
DSC Laser & Skin Care Center, Inc. and San Marino Enterprisers, Inc., a
mother of two children, as well as a member of Herald Christian Health
Center’s (HCHC) board of directors. Throughout these years, I have
developed a strong sense of self-reliance and responsibility—to my
family, to my company, and to my community.
In 1986, I moved from Hong Kong to Los Angeles and married Dr. Tony
K. Shum four years later. Dr. Shum and I are partners both in life and at
work. We have been married for 26 wonderful years and have two lovely
children. Although it was not easy to raise two children and work full time,
it is very rewarding to see my children grow and to be their role model.
My career in beauty started in Hong Kong. I was lucky to work with Ming Ming Cheng, the President of the
International Association of Professional Beauticians. We became business partners at the Monita International Group
in United States. In 1986, I came from Hong Kong to Los Angeles to set up our branch office. In 1991, I started my
first company, San Marino Enterprisers, Inc., a cosmetic research and distribution company in the United States.
In 2005, Dr. Shum and I started DSC Laser & Skin Care Center, Inc. We utilize the latest technology and products to
provide expert, quality services, such as cosmetic surgeries, laser treatments, fillers, injections, skin care treatments,
and weight loss programs to clients who want to augment their natural beauty. Our goal is to create a wellness and
health center with emphasis on maximizing inner beauty and grace. We are now involved with anti-aging research
and development. With the trust and confidence of our clients, we successfully attained the Thermage Black Diamond
Award for the years 2012, 2013 and 2014. We are also thankful to be awarded the Ultherapy Premier Treatment
Provider Award for 2013, 2014 and 2015 and the Aspire Galderma Presidential Champion Award for 2015.
As the CEO of DSC, I thrive by helping my company run efficiently and effectively. In order to restructure and grow the
company, I took a Management Development for Entrepreneurs (MDE) program at UCLA in 2015. This program gave
me not only new tools and knowledge to improve our business, but also inspiration and motivation from the prominent
professors. I believe that we can develop more creative programs and products to help us to serve our customers better.
Besides supporting my family and my company, I also serve my community. I always try my best to take time to help
others. For example, I have been on the board of directors for Herald Christian Health Center (HCHC) for seven years.
I help HCHC raise funds for needy families and to support their communal health services. I participate in numerous
good will charities both in United States and overseas. Not only am I a regular workshop speaker for the American
Cancer Society’s Look Good Feel Better program, an organization for cosmetologists to help cancer patients put their
best foot forward during cancer treatment, I also sponsor a nine years old orphan girl named Man Shou Cheng and
donate a portion of the profits from our skin care products to the CCHC orphan program. For the past decade, my
fundraising and donation efforts and services have nearly reached a million dollars.
As a mother, a business owner, and a board member of HCHC, I take all my roles and responsibilities seriously. So
far, my life has been a beautifully rewarding journey. I am grateful for the support of my family, allowing me the time
and freedom to
accomplish many
achievements in
my life. I will
always continue to
make contributions
to my family, my
company, and the
community.
