Abstract
Indonesia has many types of plants with the content of essential oil, and one of them
is a plant Jeringau (Acorus Calamus). Part of the jeringau plant that contain lots of
essential oils is a Rhizome (root) and oil levels 2-9% (Trubus, 2009). Engineering
process on the early treatment can improve the yield of oil jeringau. Targets to be
achieved in this research is to improve the production, quality (quality) and the
effectiveness of the Jeringau oil refinery (Calamus oil). Technique of fermentation is
the selected process engineering methods to improve the acquisition of oil Jeringau
The method to be used is is an experiment of the system using the method of Steam
distillation Distilation. In this method is carried out starting the treatment process of
fermentation jeringau Rhizome. The parameters of the oil to be analysed the
percentage yield, quality and analysis of physical and chemical oil include the
following: the performance of oil (color), specific gravity, optical rotation, solubility in
alcohol as well as levels of Eugenol and Asaron levels. From the analysis of the
results of research that has been done is obtained the amount of yield of0.3 -1,023%,
while the highest yield in the study was 1,023 % condensate temperature for 10 °C,
with optimum fermentation time for 12 hours. The value of specific gravity range
between - 1,0625 g/cm 3. Optical rotation values of (+)1.2. Solubility in alcohol of 1: 5.
Levels of eugenol 4.71 out of 5,505% and Beta-Asaron 92,287%.
