capture the screens and the narration of an expert performing
the procedure in a file format that can be integrated into
asynchronous e-learning lessons
Consider these five issues when designing e-learning to
teach procedures:
i. Be Detailed
ii. Be Brief
iii. Be Flexible
iv. Reformat
v. Use Audio
7. Practice Methods for Procedures
To be effective, training must provide relevant
information interspersed with frequent practice exercises
In the classroom, give the step summaries in action or decision
tables in the training manual and provide a follow-along
demonstration. Then assign short exercises that require the
trainee to perform the procedure
A common guideline in asynchronous e-learning is to follow
the first mistake with an error message and hint and follow
the second error with a demonstration of the correct
response
Most workforce training programs lack sufficient time to
ensure complete learning of the many procedures
associated with jobs
Study questions
1. What is a procedure? Explain two types of procedures.
2. Content can be learned at two levels: remember and
application. Explain briefly the levels
3. When learning procedures, employees need three basic
instructional methods. Name the methods
4. What is the difference between asynchronous and
synchronous e-learning?
