Distinguishing Between Near and Far-Transfer Training
i. In most organizations far-transfer performance deals with
one of the following domains:
1. application of social skills, for example, sales, client
service, and management;
2. design of new products or services, such as product
design or marketing; and
3. Analysis, such as financial planning, or non-routine
problem resolution, for example, advanced
troubleshooting or diagnosis.
ii. Near-transfer tasks are easier to train and give you a good
chance of getting the specified result if you follow the
appropriate teaching steps
iii. Far-transfer tasks are more challenging to instruct because the
employee will have to adapt the guidelines to fit the various
situations in which they will be applied, the likelihood of
success is less than with near-transfer tasks
iv. On the other hand, once the skills are acquired, the
employee is more versatile because she can use judgment
