Dream feeds
A dream feed means that you initiate the feed. It means that I will give you a specific time to do
the feed. You will pick baby up from being asleep & feed in the nursery. As soon as baby is
‘comfort nursing’, you will unlatch & place baby back in crib to do the falling asleep work. If your
baby is crying, you will move to your chosen methodology – example: do ‘ferber’ checks.
Dream feeds do not mean that your baby needs to stay asleep for the feed, it just means that
you initiated the feed.
If your baby is already crying at the assigned time, you need to wait for your baby to fall BACK to
sleep before you pick up to do the feed. You do not want to do intermittent reinforcement
which means: cry cry cry cry cry cry………….”ok I will feed you because it is dream feed time”.
That has just taught your baby to cry big and they get fed. This undermines sleep training
completely. Remember that babies can’t tell time. They don’t wear watches!
If you decide to do a dream feed, I will be giving you a specific recommended time.
