HOME SCHOOL
Students in private or parochial schools are exempted from compulsory attendance. In Leeper et al. v. Arlington ISD et
al., the Texas Supreme Court affirmed that a child pursuing a curriculum designed to meet basic educational goals, which
is under the direct supervision of his/her parents, is attending a private school. The GISD does not regulate, monitor,
approve, support, or endorse any person, program, group, or organization regarding home school. Persons wishing
information on home schooling should contact a home school support group or research the topic through a library or
the Internet.
It is the practice of the school district to document those students who withdraw from the school district to home school
to ensure compliance with compulsory attendance requirements and student leaver reporting. When a student is
withdrawn to be home-schooled, the parent should be asked to complete the “Assurance to Home School” form
available on the Intranet (Departments, Student Services, Attendance, Withdrawal Info), “Assurance to Home School in
English and Spanish”) OR (See Appendix - Assurance to Home School). The school may also accept a written letter from
the parent expressing the desire to home school the student and the required information mentioned below. The
assurance to home school form or parent letter MUST include the start date (which must be within two days of the
withdrawal date – today or the day after today) for home schooling, the students’ name, and the parent’s signature. The
appropriate withdrawal code is “60.” Attendance is not kept by GISD for students who are being home-schooled.
