ATTENDANCE FOR CREDIT
90% ATTENDANCE RULE
BOARD POLICY FEC: ATTENDANCE FOR CREDIT
Policy FEC pertains to the application of the state rule requiring a student to have ninety percent attendance in a class or
course or risk failure of that class or course. The rule stipulates that a student who has less than ninety percent
attendance for the days a class is offered cannot receive credit for the class without action by the student and school. A
campus attendance committee appointed by the board’s designee (principal) may award the student credit because of
extenuating circumstances regarding the absences or the student may complete a Principal’s Plan. The policy outlines
the processes for implementing the ninety percent rule, i.e., notice, conditions for restoration of credit, and the appeal
process for contesting a denial of credit.
NINETY PERCENT ATTENDANCE RULE
The key point in determining compliance with the 90% rule is that all absences are considered. The number of days
absent in a course is divided by the number of days in the semester or in the school year that the course meets.
90 % = Number of days absent in a course
Number of days in the semester of the school year
Any unexcused “U,” any unknown “A,” and all excused “E” absences are considered in calculating attendance
percentages. Suspension days coded “E-OS” are included. Nonabsences “N”s and present codes “P”s as well as
“tardies” “T”s and “kiosk tardies” “K”s are not considered in calculations.
Considered in Calculating Attendance % Not Considered in Calculating Attendance%
A- Unknown Absence N- Nonabsence
U- Unexcused Absence P-Present
E- Excused Absence (including Out of School Suspension) T-Tardy
K-Kiosk
Maintaining a specific grade average and having ninety-percent attendance in each class is required of students in order
to be given credit for a class. For elementary students, only absences in Period 2 are used when determining 90%
compliance. For secondary students, each class is considered individually. For secondary students, absence failures for
each semester are averaged as “69”s for year-long classes. Thus, a student may pass a course for the year if the other
semester has a grade of “70” or above; the student can average pass. The number of absences permitted for the year for
elementary students and for each semester for middle school and high school students is posted on the Attendance
Page in the Student Services Department of the Intranet.
