Less than 500 Feet from a Residential Area: This data was aggregated to give a sense of
industrial sites that are within close proximity to homes. Although not all industrial sites have to
be at least 500 feet away from residential areas, there are cumulative social and economic

impacts felt by communities that are burdened with high industrial activity of all ranges .
Less than 500 Feet from Residential Structures: Some industries require a 500-foot buffer
between them and residentially zoned areas. We captured the residentially zoned areas that are
within that 500-foot buffer, but also wanted to capture homes within the range that do not have
residential zoning. Those structures do not have residential zoning rights, and consequently do
not have the same ability to identify a proximity violation by an industry.
