Match Report
Saturday 11th February
Wincanton Tn v Brislington FC
Brislington headed to Wincanton, to face a team that had recovered from 3-0 down to draw 3-3 at
Ironmould Lane earlier in the season. That game saw the foxes lose Ashley Kington for the rest of the
season a er rupturing his ACL.
Recent form had suggested that the Foxes were on a ‘goalscoring’ roll, 12 goals scored without reply
a er winning 2-0 against 4th placed FC Bristol & convincing wins against TWL Premier league side
Cadbury Heath (6-0) & 6th Placed Odd Down (4-0), however nobody expected the u er demoli on
of the ‘Wasps’ that would unfold, especially on their home turf. Widely fancied at the start of the
season Wincanton we’re si ng in 6th place at the start of play but had suffered patchy form with
losses to Almondsbury and Cheddar amongst their 5 ou ngs since the turn of the year.
Lee perks was s ll without Harry Tobin, Danny Barwood, Ash McGrane, & Joel Smith, but Jack Allward
returned for his first start and the bench contained the fit again Josh Egan and Danny Doddimead who
scored from the bench on his return a er 11 weeks of inac vity.
On what can only be described as diabolical surface Brislington started as they meant to go on with
McLennan and Griffiths a acking straight from the kick off culmina ng in a Buck header at goal inside
50 seconds! 40 seconds later McLennan set Griffiths off toward the le corner of the Wasps box and
despite running diagonally away from goal the keeper elected to challenge with his feet, giving away
a penalty and receiving a yellow card in the process. The penalty was dispatched by skipper Asa White
0-1 less than 3 minutes on the clock. 2 minutes later gri y work from Jones and white saw White
emerge with the ball from the touch line and cut inside just outside the box, his slipped pass found
Griffiths who was running away from goal but his slick half turn and shot found the keeper wan ng
and the ball nestled low into the far corner. 0-2 less than 6 minutes played.
Immediately from their own kick off Wincanton’s a empt to play forward was thwarted by Me ers
& Jones who set McLennan off down the le . His cross was par ally cleared by the defender under
challenge from Griffiths and the ball looped to the arriving Me ers who’s volley from 5 yards outside
the box, beat the keeper along the ground to the keepers le . 0-3 less than 7 minutes gone, and some
ques onable goalkeeping from the Wasps number 1!
Wincanton had their first shot on target 30 seconds later but Dorrington caught the specula ve volley
with ease. With the pitch making a slick passing game impossible it resembled a rugby match at mes
with players looking for territory rather than accuracy. Wincanton usually looking for their huge No10
Garner.
On 10 minutes a cross from the le found Garner who’s volley from 10 yards was saved confidently
by Dorrington. The quality between the two goalkeepers was proving to be clear dis nc on between
the sides. On 13 minutes the pitch claimed its first vic m, Griffiths jumped for a header and found a
divot on landing rolling his ankle in the process. He was immediately replaced by Doddimead.
On 18 minutes Scadding should have done be er when Me ers lobbed him through but a er
controlling neatly with his chest his effort was saved by the keeper. Two minutes later Wincanton
u lising their long throw specialist worked a move from le to right via the big man which saw the
right full back presented with a clear shot at goal from inside the box, again his shot was excellently
saved and held by Dorrington. On 22 minutes the pitch claimed its second vic m in Wincanton’s Cam
Allen also seemingly to have rolled an ankle. This coincided with a Brislington corner and Wincanton
had yet to replace their off going wide man when the corner was waved on.
The first cross was flicked beyond everyone in the area as a Wincanton defender a empted to play
forward to Garner, he collapsed in a heap a er tripping in one of the many ruts in the pitch, the ball
was gathered and crossed by Scadding into the path of the industrious George Jones who volleyed
