RANDY PERDUE
We are disturbed, not by the events of life, but by the
views, we take of them.
~ Epictetus
It is a powerful realization indeed when you
understand that your beliefs are the key to your
emotions. It is what you believe about the event
that causes the emotion, not the event itself.
Our paradigms are very powerful. In 1543,
Copernicus revealed on his deathbed that the
sun was the center of our universe and not the
earth. He knew that his discovery would not be
accepted, so he waited until he was dying to
reveal the truth. In the early part of the 17th
Century, Galileo proved that Copernicus was
correct. He spent the rest of his days under
house arrest. On May 6th, 1954, Roger Banister
broke the four-minute mile. It was believed to
be humanly impossible. After he broke the
record, many others broke it. What I find so
fascinating is that our beliefs get so entrenched
in our brain that changing our core beliefs
seems crazy. Ralph Waldo Emerson once said,
“A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little
minds.”
