Target I: Educational Enrichment kicked off its six month ASCEND Program January 31, 2015 by
inducting twenty North Alabama high school students into the Epsilon Gamma Omega Inaugural
ASCEND class. Currently, there are ten high schools represented within the EGO ASCEND Program.

After an application process, selected students and their parents gathered Saturday, January 31st in the
Multipurpose Room of the School of Business on the campus of Alabama A&M University for the start
of ASCEND. Greetings were given by Epsilon Gamma Omega Chapter Basileus, Soror Wilma J. Ruffin
and President of Alabama A&M University, Dr. Andrew Hugine, Jr. followed by a video presentation
“Epsilon Gamma Omega-Think HBCU.” The video showcased Notable Alumni of every HBCU in the
United States highlighted with names of EGO Sorors that are graduates of HBCUs. The video
presentation, developed by Target I Vice Chairman Soror Venita Clisby-King and Target I Leaders Joy
Agee and Jessica Kennedy, also highlighted HBCU graduate facts.

DID YOU KNOW?
 222 of the 308 members of the Epsilon Gamma Omega Chapter are graduates of an HBCU
 75% of all Black PhD recipients are graduates of an HBCU

After the video presentation, the ASCEND Induction Ceremony began. Students were given the
ASCEND oath one by one. They did it with a smile! As Soror Mary Rankin said during the icebreaker,
“A-S-C-E-N-D, A-S-C-E-N-D, A-S-C-E-N-D ARE YOU READY?”

At the conclusion of the program, the first workshop began which focused on the importance of SMART
(Science, Match and Related Technologies) Careers and HBCUs. Target I committee members provided
students with an overview on college exploration, career exploration, cultural arts, S.T.E.M. activities,
UN activities and civic engagement. For the next few months, presenters, for the topics mentioned, will
have in depth discussions with ASCEND students to make sure they are on the right path for the future.
