Calling in Sick

                  • Rangers who are sick must call or text their operations supervisor and shift partners to
                     notify them of their absence;
                  • Rangers must be aware of and follow the BMEA contract provisions for calling in sick
                     and the use of sick time.

              Overtime/Flex time
              Overtime is earned in the following situations:
                  • Extended shifts due to emergency responses and priority calls for service (e.g., public
                     safety issues, significant violations, requests by other agencies for assistance);

                  •  Standby responses;
                  •  Calls back to work (e.g., additional staffing requests for wildfires and emergencies);
                  • Special staffing circumstances based on attendance requested by the department (i.e.,
                     special training, unscheduled requested attendance at meetings, extended shifts for
                     burn operations and special events, extended hours for unplanned critical ranger
                     coverage); and
                  • Scheduled priority ranger patrol coverage as overtime funding allows (e.g., night
                     patrol, special event staffing).
                  • All discretionary overtime must be approved by an operations supervisor (or lead
                     ranger in their absence)
                  • Operations supervisors must receive written notification of all overtime submitted on
                     time sheets.

              Approval and notification procedure
              Operations supervisors must approve overtime requests in advance unless overtime is accrued
              during a standby response or response to an emergency. Rangers must notify their supervisor
              after standby and emergency incident responses to report overtime situations and hours worked.

              Overtime hours associated with service calls and emergencies should be documented in incident
              reports. Comp time will be accrued in a manner consistent with rangers’ BMEA contract. The
              weekend senior ranger on duty may also approve overtime in the lead ranger’s absence.

              Situations appropriate for flextime and adjusted schedules rather than overtime
              Non-overtime scheduling (flextime) will be allowed when rangers choose in advance to work
              hours outside of their normally scheduled shifts. A supervisor or lead ranger must approve all
              schedule changes.

              Adjustments appropriate for non-overtime (flextime) schedule changes include coming in for a
              meeting on a day off, attending volunteer appreciation events, training/qualification shoots,
