continue to cherish and extend these rare bonds of
genuine friendships for many generations to come.
After the two families were involuntarily separated by
the Indian Ocean the visits became infrequent but
contact was maintained by phone, e-mail and the
occasional visits. However, though absent in person there
will always be the presence of a strong bond between the
two families mainly because of the strong and lasting
cohesion between our Mother and Aunty Thilaka.
Aunty Thilaka was a very warm and welcoming person
who lavished care on those who knew her. She had a
strong dedication to her family and the strength of
character of a great heroine. She had a very enlightened
and somewhat impish sense of humour. She at times took
a well worn English adage and convert it to a point of
brilliant humour. An example of her advanced sense of
humour was her conversion of the adage 'familiarity
breeds contempt' to 'familiarity breeds children.'
Collectively, the Liyanages do very sincerely mourn the
devastatingly sad loss of their favourite Aunt who to
them was also a surrogate mother, a confidant, true
friend and 'adopted' close relative. It was indeed
extremely gratifying that one of the Liyanage siblings
was able to meet and spend some time with her in Sydney
last November and recount some of the wonderful
moments our families spent together in those Halcyon
days of our past association.
May she rest in Peace in Heaven
where she rightly belongs
