What’s the best piece of advice you were ever given?
“Nothing is ever going to be perfect!” I had a boss early in my IT career that couldn’t understand why I always
wanted every program or test to be perfect before we released it to our users. He called me aside once and
asked me if I thought Bill Gates thought all Microsoft products were perfect before they released them to their
customers? Of course they aren’t, I responded! He assured me that perfection in IT was nearly impossible to
reach as “it’s never going to be perfect.” He allowed me to do my best, always striving for perfection while
realizing it might be unattainable. But also, learning to accept that our best is what is needed and accept that
you will constantly deal with imperfections. It’s just the nature of IT!
