he election of Donald Trump was not about
Twhether the government should be smaller,
but whether we should preserve the nation-state.
Trump's economic era represents a shift from Global-
ism, where world priorities take precedence over
national interests, to Nationalism, which advocates the
political independence of countries. The conflict
between Collectivism, where persons are subservient to
an unelected ruling class and rights are granted by the
state, and Individualism, where persons freely elect
their leaders and rights stem from the individual, will
define Trump's economic era. The election of Donald
Trump represents a populist movement away from
collectivism toward individualism, away from global-
ism toward nationalism.
This populist movement is not against
globalization, which is the process whereby goods,
capital, and people move across borders, but it is
against globalism, which is the belief that global
governance should replace the sovereignty of nations.
Collectivists put the state before the individual, but they
fail to understand that the system cannot increase the
