Chapter 1: The Stage is Set

You can choose your gender identity in New York
City from a list of 31 politically correct different
genders, one for each day of the month! If you are an
employer, you can be fined up to $250,000 for failure to
use and recognize employees, tenants, customer’s, or
client’s preferred name, pronoun, and title regardless of
what sex the person was at birth. You can find a list of
the different gender pronouns on the internet. While
Facebook has always used sex terms (male and female)
to describe users' sex, it recognizes 51 gender options.
While sex refers to biology, gender is about your
sense of who you are as a human being. California
became the first state to allow its residents to opt for a
gender-neutral designation on birth certificates recog-
nizing a third, non-binary gender category for Califor-
nians who do not identify as either male or female.
In 2017, Google and Facebook accounted for the
majority of digital advertising outside of China and
dominate how people receive their news. The trend is
for people to encounter news articles via search engines
and social media. The most popular sites are Facebook,
YouTube (owned by Google), Twitter (a partner with
                        Google) and Facebook’s Instagram.
Facebook promotes content shared by friends and
family that encourages interaction between people and
de-emphasizes news media content. Facebook deter-
mines which content is allowed by judging which posts
are “meaningful interactions” among users. Facebook
claims that they will de-emphasize anyone without
meaningful interactions. Only Facebook can determine
what is and is not “meaningful interaction.” This
practice means that publishers like BuzzFeed who
publish social and lifestyle content qualify them for
