a political movement or a terrorist group, the govern-
ment would not protect it, but because the government
claims that Islam is a religion, laws protect it.
As Muslims gain ground in Europe, their presence
poses a legal dilemma for countries. The European
Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg, France, is the
authority in determining if Sharia Law or National Law
has precedence in specific cases. For example, Sharia
Law does not recognize wills; instead, sons inherit the
majority of an estate. At times, the conflict is not legal,
but it is cultural. For example, the practice of female
genital mutilation, although not based on Sharia Law,
is a widely accepted practice among Muslims.
The Canadian parliament has passed a non-
binding motion, M-103, which states that the
government must “condemn Islamophobia, homophobia
and all forms of systemic racism and religious
discrimination.” In opposition to M-103, Candice
Malcolm founded the North Initiative, a Canadian
group of concerned citizens who support Canada’s
foundational values and sound immigration policies.
Pegida is a similar movement in Europe. Pegida is a
German nationalist, anti-Islam, far-right political
movement opposed to the Islamization of Europe.
Pegida hosts rallies throughout Europe aimed at
educating people about the dangers of unbridled
immigration and urges governments to enforce existing
laws to limit the free entry of migrants. Pegida is
floundering because it is getting scant support; the
leadership is overburdened—voluntary commitment can
only go so far.
In the name of globalization and diversity, not
only are Muslims protected, but they qualify for
