consuming maror is a reminder that although we experience bi erness in life it being dipped in
charoset represents the opportunity to overcome challenges in our life with the sweetness of
the many good things each of our lives have.

Eating matzah, marror and charoset this way reminds us of how, in the days of the Temple,
Hillel would do so, making a sandwich of the Pashal lamb, matzah and marror, in order to
observe the law “You shall eat it (the Pesach sacrifice) on matzah and marror.”
Is Korech a Mitzvah? - Coral Vaknin (11th Grade)
In the Gemara in Pesachim 115a we learn about the mitzvot of Maror and Matzah and the ways
in which they were eaten while the Beit Hamikdash was s ll standing. Hillel held that you should
wrap them up together into a sandwich to fulfill the Pasuk in Bamidbar 9:11 , ַמצּוֹת וּ ְמ ֹר ִרים-ַﬠל
יֹא ְכ ֻלהוּ. According to Rashi and Rashbam in the same Gemara (Pesachim 115a) this wrap
included the Korban Pesach. The mishna says that even though it is not a mitzvah we bring
before him the matzah, le uce, charoset, and the two cooked foods (referring to the Korban
Pesach and Korban Chagigah). The Gemara concludes that since there is no final ruling on who
we should hold like, the custom is to recite the bracha on Matzah and then eat it, recite the
blessing on Maror and eat it, and then eat them together without a blessing, as a remembrance
to the Beit Hamikdash just as Hillel does. So even though Korech is not an actual mitzvah from
the Torah, we do it to honor the Beit Hamikdash during our seder to remember that crucial part
of our people’s history, just as it is done in weddings when the groom crushes the cup. Chag

Shulchan Orech – ֻשׁ ְל ָחן עוֹ ֵרך
Now is time to enjoy the festival meal and participate in lively discussion. This is a great
time to take out a Sefer Shemot and discuss other aspects of the Exodus. It is permitted
to drink wine between the second and third cups
