Nak~hatras into the NaJc_~hatras of gods and those of Varna is
correct-and I think it is-it at once fixes the position of the
Kfittik&s at the beginning of the Devayana or the vernal equinox
at the time when these Vedic works were compiled.
There is another and still important passage in the Taittirtya
~tA which supplies further confirmatory evidence on the same
point. In the Taittirtya SatphitA vii. 4. 8, we have a discussion as
to the time best suited for the commencement of the Satras like
the gavam-ayana which last for one whole year and as the pa~sage
is important in various ways I shall give it here in the original :
