POETS CUP

IN OUR HAND WE HOLD A BALL
               WHITE AND DIMPLED RATHER SMALL
OH HOW BLAND IT DOES APPEAR
               THIS HARMLESS LOOKING LITTLE SPHERE

BY ITS SIZE WE COULD NOT GUESS
THE AWESOME STRENGTH IT DOES POSSESS
BUT SINCE WE FELL BENEATH ITS SPELL
WE’VE WANDRED THROUGH THE FIRES OF HELL

BUT HOLD I HEAR YOU ALL PROCLAIM
FOR GOLF IS MUCH MORE THAN JUST A GAME
AND SO WE GATHER WEEK BY WEEK
FOR GLORY INSTEAD IS WHAT WE SEEK

WE TAKE UP LESSONS BY THE SCORE
AND BUY NEW CLUBS THAT MAY GIVE MORE
FOR US THERE IS ONLY ONE AIM
AND THAT IS TO CONQUER THIS TERRIBLE GAME

AND SO IT WAS JUST BEYOND JUNE
THAT SOME TWO HUNDRED APPEARED IMMUNE
TO CHANCES OF BOGEYS, SHANKS AND TWO PUTTS
INSTEAD THEIR THOUGHTS WERE ONLY OF CUPS

BUT THE COURSE FOUGHT BACK AND TRULY BATTERED
AND ONCE AGAIN MOST DREAMS WERE SHATTERED
FOR AS IT HAD BEEN FOR MOST OF THE YEAR
ANOTHER WEEK WENT BY WITHOUT GOOD CHEER

BUT SOME AMONG THE GATHERED THRONG
WERE SURE TO COME THROUGH VERY STRONG
FOR THEY WOULD SURELY HAVE NO BAR
TO MAKE A SCORE THAT WAS UNDER PAR.

FOUR UNDER PAR WAS SCORED BY BOB WEAVER
MAKING SIXTH PLACE FOR THIS WANNABE DIVA
WHILST ON THE SAME SCORE LIKE A WILY FOX
WAS THE UBIQUITOUS PLAYER MARK WILLCOX

NEXT CAME A PLAYER WHO HAS ALREADY BEEN SEEN
WHO IS SHOWING THAT HE CAN BE QUITE SUPREME
FOR AFTER SIXTY SEVEN SHOTS WITH GREAT APLOMB
A DESERVED THIRD PLACE WENT TO MARK OSTROM

SECOND PLACE WOULD BE LIKE THE LAND OF PLENTY
