Is it permissible Islamically for a person to break his fast because his work schedule is difficult?Fasting is one of the pillars of Islam which is established by the Qur%u2019an and Sunnah and by the consensus of the ummah. It is not permissible for Muslims to break the fast without a legitimate religious excuse, such as sickness or travel?A person can take a leave of absence during Ramadan, or he can reduce his workload during this month, or he can change his work to something that is easier. If he can't reduce his work schedule and he is facing hardship during the fast, this is not an acceptable reason for breaking the fast, and he has to be patient and seek the help of Allah to help keep his fast intact. Allah says (what can be translated as): %u201cSay (O Muhammad): %u2018O My slaves who believe (in the Oneness of Allah Islamic Monotheism), be afraid of your Lord (Allah) and keep your duty to Him. Good is (the reward) for those who do good in this world, and Allah%u2019s earth is spacious (so if you cannot worship Allah at one place, then go to another)! Only those who are patient shall receive their reward in full, without reckoning%u201d [al-Zumar 39:10]Is the Duaa' accepted during fasting? The supplication of a fasting person is accepted as narrated in the following report:This report was narrated by at-Tirmidhi (2526) from Abu Hurayrah, from the Prophet (pbuh), who said: %u201cThere are three whose supplication is not rejected: a just ruler, the fasting person when he breaks his fast, and the prayer of one who has been wronged is lifted up above the clouds, the gates of heaven are opened for it and the Lord, may He be glorified and exalted, says: %u2018By My might, I shall surely grant you support you [against the wrongdoer], even after some time.%u2019%u201d Classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh at-Tirmidhi.According to a report narrated by Ahmad (8030): %u201c%u2026 and the fasting person until he breaks his fast.%u201d This hadith was classed as saheeh by Shu%u2018ayb al-Arna%u2019oot in Tahqeeq al-Musnad.So the supplication of a fasting person that is answered is that which they offer whilst they are fasting, until they start to break their fast, and not after that.Copyright %u00a9 2023 Islamic Association of Raleigh.
