Rules
• Don’t buy the first horse you try. Always look at different options befo-
re making a final decision. Your dream horse may be found in the most
unexpected place.
• Ride the horse at least twice. Try to do it at different times of the day and in
different environments.
• Don’t show too much interest in the horse in front of the seller.
• Take your trainer with you, and ask him or her to ride the horse.
• Check the horse’s behavior when in the stable to see if he has any stable vices.
• Ask if the horse has ever taken any medication and why.
• Always pay for a good pre-purchase vet check
• Once you’ve found the right
horse, get everything in writing. In
many countries, the sale of horses is
informal. Not every seller writes a
contract, so make sure to write one.
• Pay attention to the relations-
hip between the owner and the horse.
• Ask other trainers or ex-
perienced riders what they think
about the price of the horse. Many
horses are sold for more than what
they really cost.
• Ask other equestrian what
they know or have seen from the
horse. Make sure to check the horse’s
show record to verify his results in
competitions.
• Ask the former owner why
he or she is selling the horse.
