Andalusian or
Pura Raza Española
Andalusian horses come from the
Iberian Peninsula. They were origina-
lly used as war horses because they
are agile, intelligent and courageous.
They are not very tall horses, they
measure 15 to 16 hands. Their most
common color is grey, but you can
also find them in dark and brown.
They have an attractive head, strong
neck, abundant mane and tail, and a high stepping action. Andalusians are great
horses for dressage, and they are one of the few breeds that can properly perform
classical dressage (Petguide.com, 2013).
Oldenburg
Oldenburg are very noble German hor-
ses. This breed was created in the 1600s by a
dressage rider called Count Anton Gunther
von Oldenburg. Oldenburg horses are Frie-
sian horses with Iberian and Barb blood-
lines added. Over the years, other breeds
such as Hanoverians, Thoroughbreds, and
Cleveland Bay were used to develop Ol-
denburg horses. These horses are good for
every level of horse owners because they
are easy to train, kind, reliable and friendly.
Their height is approximately 16.2 to 17.2 hands, and they are appropriate for
both jumping and dressage (PetGuide.com, 2013).
If you want a show jumping horse,
make sure your horse
• Doesn’t refuse to jump easily.
• Is not afraid of jumping the water jumps.
