Even though physical appearance, and sometimes even the color of a horse, are im-
portant to many riders, always choose a horse with a heart of gold. Some horses have
something we call heart. What I mean by that is a horse who just tries harder and does
everything possible to please you. They forgive your mistakes and do their best for
you. Golden hearts are incredibly powerful and difficult to find. They are so power-
ful that they can make up for some less desirable qualities such as color and size.
Common breeds for sport horses
Another key point to keep in mind when you are looking for the horse of your
dreams is the horse’s breed. Always do a research to determine if the breed you
are thinking about suits your riding ability and goals. Some breeds are more
suitable for some disciplines than others. However, many horse breeds such as
Hanoverian, Dutch Warmblood, or Holsteiner are good for both jumping and
dressage. Sadly, in some cases your location may make harder to find your bre-
ed dream. If you live in a country full of Paso Fino or Quarter horses, finding a
Selle Français horse may be hard and expensive.
Dutch Warmblood or
KWPN Warmblood
Dutch Warmblood horses are very
talented sport horses derived from
French, German, and English horses
with two native Dutch breeds: the
Gelderlander and the Groningen. The-
se horses usually stand over 16 hands,
with some reaching 17 hands. Com-
mon colors are chestnut, bay, black,
and grey, and white markings are also
frequent. They are highly muscled on
their neck, chest and legs because of
their Dutch backgrounds. Their back
is long, with the croup short and flat.
Their temperament is suitable for both professional and amateur riders because
they are intelligent, steady, enthusiastic, and easy to handle (International Mu-
seum of the Horse, 2018). Dutch Warmblood horses are appropriate for dressa-
ge, jumping, and eventing. If you check the list of top horses in these categories,
you will find Dutch Warmblood horses for sure.
