he stars were always brightly shining whenever Tala

would look up into the sky; she would always try to

distract herself from the constant bickering she had

heard ever since her dad lost everything to gambling.
Fights would break out between both of her parents then

the sudden breaking of all sorts of things would ensue.

Whenever these things happen, she would hide in her

bedroom closet until her mother would come to find her in

the morning with tear-stained cheeks and prominent

bruises and serve her breakfast. They would talk about their

days, both in school and at work, and when her father was

not home, they would go outside to spend some time

together, to get ice cream and talk. They were out one

night, admiring the stars; while they were quietly enjoying

each other’s presence, her mother started to speak. “Every

star in the sky has its purpose, just like humans, we live this

life to serve a purpose.” Her mother smiled as she turned to

Tala. “Mommy, if humans have a purpose, then what’s your

purpose?” her mother let out a soft chuckle at her innocent

question. “Darling, my purpose in this life is to take care of

you, and if I am gone, just look up at the stars and know

that I am one of them, always there, following and looking

out for you no matter what.” She answered and kissed her

forehead. These interactions with her mother gradually

became rare as they started to struggle financially and so

more and more fights and arguments broke out between

                         Tala’s parents.
