The costly exterior stones are very special. Anyone who
has ever been to Israel can testify of the remarkable character
of the Jerusalem stone, seemingly designed by God Himself
for a unique effect on the eye. As the brochure specifies:

The Jerusalem Great Synagogue will be built from that
beautiful Jerusalem stone which is known to change its
colour throughout the day, the sun giving it a golden tinge
towards evening—hence the expression, "Jerusalem, the
                                        5
                                Golden."
Like Solomon's Temple, the Great Synagogue will have
a tall tower in front, divided to represent the two tablets of
stone bearing the Ten Commandments. The interior archi-
tecture will reflect the two major branches of the Jewish
people today, the Sephardic (Oriental) and the Ashkenazic
(European), along with a blending of unique features of
                            Jerusalem.
The choir will sing from a sunken area, to be heard clearly
but not to be seen. The roof above the choir platform will be
convertible—able to be opened to the sky—in order to ac-
commodate the Jewish wedding custom of marrying "directly
                           under the sky."
Twelve stained-glass windows will surround the sanctuary,
and a specially designed window more than twenty meters
high (over sixty feet) will divide the tablets forming the
central tower and face the Old City and the Temple site.
Thus, as do all synagogues throughout the world, the Great
Synagogue will proclaim its subservience to the holy Mount
Moriah, site of the ancient Temples of God.

                                      THE SYNAGOGUE AND THE TEMPLE
With all of its planned magnificence, it is no wonder that
the Great Synagogue has the occasional honor of being
