Honorary Degree, Doctor of Philosophy in Political Science (Studies)

he was among the few who completed Standard Six with good grades.
Honoris Causa Gaob ǁGaroëb credits this interest in education to his parents who were always

interested in his schooling. The Gaob always had a dream of becoming a
medical doctor. It was his observation and experiences that led him to conclude
at a young age that the social and health conditions of his community members
would be addressed, if he with others, become the change they wanted to see,
provided that the motive is serving others above his own personal interests.

3.2 Secondary, Tertiary Education and Employment

Upon completion of Standard Six in Usakos in 1958, the young ǁGaroëb,
enrolled at Augustineum in Okahandja to continue with his Standard Seven. In
the mid 60s, he was among the only three students who completed matric or
Standard Ten, which he passed with distinction. He then moved to Walvis Bay
where he worked at a Metal-box fishing company.
To further his studies, in 1966 he applied to study medicine at the University
College of Zululand in South Africa. Due to financial challenges, and family
obligations, the young ǁGaroëb returned to Namibia and became a teacher.
In 1968, Gaob ǁGaroëb took up the position of Clerk at the Magistrate’s
Office in Khorixas. While working as a Clerk, he studied LLB degree through
the University of South Africa (UNISA), between 1968 and 1972, and upon
completion of the degree, he became a magistrate under the Head of Native
        Affairs Commissioner, Mr Jan Piek.

        4. FAMILY AND TRADITIONAL LEADERSHIP

Mr Chancellor Sir, in 1964, while a student at Augustineum, Gaob Justus
ǁGaroëb met his sweetheart and future wife Irmgard Tsaës with whom he married
officially on 8th July 1972. It appears to me that Goab ǁGaroëb, as Socrates
used to say to his students, “marry if you can. If you marry a good wife, you are
twice as blessed. If you marry a bad wife, you become a philosopher”. In this
case, it is clear the Gaob is blessed! I say so for various reasons. Chief among
