time, Chief ǁGaroëb led twelve Headmen from different Clans of the Damara
Honoris Causa people, under the guidance of the reigning Gaob Dawid Goreseb. In 1976,
with the passing of the late Gaob Dawid Goreseb, ǁGaroëb was appointed as
the founding Chairperson of the Damara Raad and subsequently became the
Goab of the ǂNūkhoen ǁAes (Damaran), a position and title he holds to this day.
5. PRESERVATION OF CULTURE
Cultural preservation in this context could be understood as, well-designed
methodologies, to maintain cultural heritage from the past for the benefit of
the present and future generations. Gaob Justus ǁGaroëb has been a strong
proponent of the preservation of the Damara culture and heritage. The continued
promotion and preservation of the Damara culture were reignited and promoted
by Gaob ǁGaroëb through the continued celebrations of the Annual Traditional
festivals known as the “Gaob Fees” since 1976. These events attract young and
old, including members from other communities.
6. POLITICAL LIFE AND CONTRIBUTION TO NATIONAL LIBERATION
Mr. Chancellor Sir, it is right that we ask, when did Goab become politically
awakened? The answer we may state is: It was at Augustineum School in
Okahandja by 1959, when Gaob Justus ǁGaroëb became aware of the work of
the Africa National Congress (ANC) and of the high school student uprising in
South Africa. However, he became more involved during his stay in Walvis Bay.
There, he worked closely with his contemporaries such as; Nathaniel Maxulili,
Ben Amathila, Betheul Haraseb, Ismael ǁNaobeb and Benjamin Tusi !Auxab.
This activism led to the apartheid security forces creating a file on him. Unaware
of this, when he accompanied Honourable Agnes Tjongarero to apply for a
scholarship to study nursing in South Africa, he discovered that the Bureau of
State Security (BOSS) already had three big files on him in Walvis Bay.
