TEARS OF SUFFERING
“Where?”
“Aunt’s place.”
Mouth wide open, she said, “You have an aunt in
Thimphu? What happened? How come you were in the
street?”
The complex question required him to be fluent in
Dzongkha, so he remained silent. Tears welling in his
eyes, he continued to sweep the floor.
Ama sat on the sofa when she saw him wipe tears with
his sleeve. “Sit here, Ugyen. Now tell me, why didn’t you
stay with your aunt?”
Ugyen wished to forget everything about his past,
including his parents, but he felt obliged to share
everything to Ama. So he sat beside her and narrated his
distasteful saga, often blinking his petite eyes. He choked
on words at the flashback of his mother breathing her
last. He hid his face in his hands and sobbed
uncontrollably.
Ama looked up and closed her eyes, wondering why such
hardship and tragedy had to befall him. Reminiscing the
boy’s story, her heart sank. She couldn’t comprehend
what hit her, but a nagging pain troubled her now and
then. “Oh, dear.” She pressed her bosom and sighed. “I
am sorry to hear everything about you, Ugyen.”
