TEARS OF SUFFERING
Ugyen stopped sobbing and resumed his chores. After
breakfast, Doctor and Ama readied for their offices.
“Ugyen, don’t go anywhere,” said Ama. “Stay here with
Au Lham.”
“Yeah, Lham should look after him,” added Doctor.
“Feel free to do everything. Watch TV, eat and play
around, but don’t go out, okay?”
Knees like rubber, Ugyen replied in a low-toned voice.
“Laso la.”
After they left, Ugyen helped Au Lham in chores for the
rest of the day.
In the afternoon, Samphel returned home. He was
relieved to see Ugyen not absconding. He changed his
dress and called Ugyen to the living room. “Are you
happy here?”
Ugyen knelt on the floor and broke down like a
supplicant. He needed no words to express how grateful
he was. His tears said them all. So he covered his face in
his hand and sniffled all he could. “You're my savior. And
your parents are benevolent.”
Samphel pulled him up and consoled him. “Don’t you
cry. We are now brothers.”
Ama returned from her office and asked if lunch was
ready. Au Lham said it was ready.
