TEARS OF SUFFERING
Samphel’s jaw dropped. “No way, you look like a
celebrity kid.” He dusted Ugyen’s shoulder. “I can’t
believe it. Come, let’s have tea.”
Ugyen could only grin at Samphel’s compliment.
Samphel took him into a cafeteria and ordered tea and
cream-roll cakes for themselves. Over tea and cake, they
chatted for a while. They returned home before dusk and
pressed the doorbell.
T-I-N-G T-O-N-G!
Au Lham opened the door. The boys’ virtually-identical
appearance flummoxed and froze her at the door a while.
Mouth wide open, she exclaimed, “No way!” She then
gawked at Ugyen surreptitiously. For some illogical
reasons, she didn’t like the boy. She reacted spitefully to
Ugyen ever since he had walked into their home. Ugyen
apprehended her reactions but remained acquiescent. He
walked away from Au Lham and sat beside Samphel in
the living room. They watched television.
But Ugyen fidgeted when he saw Au Lham throwing him
a menacing look from the kitchen door. When Samphel
said something to him, he only nodded, foot tapping a
steady rhythm onto the ground.
He got up. “I think I should help Au Lham,” he said.
