dhapa, every day. One day, Ama saw him holding the
dhapa when she came to ask him to go to market.
She stared at dhapa. “A dhapa?”
He hid it behind his back and grinned. “Nothing, Ama.”
“Show me.”
Ugyen handed over the dhapa to her.
As she read the inscription, her face grimaced. “Who
gave this to you?”
Ugyen dropped his head. “A friend of mine, Ama.”
“What kind of friend?”
“My classmate.”
“You don’t lie to me.” She handed back the dhapa. “I
want you to focus on your studies. Nothing else. You
understand that?” She held her chest to control her
abrupt breathing. “You better understand.”
Ugyen cringed and nodded.
Ama left, assuming Ugyen would’ve apprehended more
than what she had to say, but despite her advice on the
repercussion of such gaffe, his relationship with Tshoden
deepened with each passing day. He assumed his
relationship with Tshoden was platonic, little realizing it
