TEARS OF SUFFERING


            Ugyen clasped his arms and said, “I can’t wait to see it.”
            Back at home, Ugyen stared at the ceiling and wondered
            what might be the present. “What could she get for me
            from  her  village?  What’s  so  special  in  that  gift  she
            wouldn’t tell me?”

            The next day, Tshoden called him the verandah. “Here.
            It’s  a  token  of  friendship.  Now,  open  it  and  see  to
            yourself.”

            Ugyen opened the package and saw a dhapa.


            “Do you like it?” asked Tshoden.

            An  inscription  on  the  bottom  read:  “For  my  forever
            friend.” Overwhelmed by emotions, Ugyen read it again.


            With the mouth fully drawn back at the corners, Ugyen
            exclaimed,  “It  looks  expensive.  Where’d  you  get  that
            from?”

            Tshoden flashed a smile at him. “Don’t worry, my
            father owns a machine for these kinds of crafts.”

            He choked on his much-obliged words. “Thank you so
            much, Tshoden. It means a lot to me.”


            “You are welcome.”

            Ugyen had a special closet at home. He put his precious
            gift  there.  He  opened  the  closet  and  fiddled  with  the
