TEARS OF SUFFERING
Early the next day, Ugyen picked Tshoden from her place
and traveled in a cab to Paro town. From there, they took
another cab to the road point. On the winding, hilly route
to the sacred monastery, they chatted and laughed.
She puffed. “Ugyen, what’s your ambition?”
“What’s got to do with that?” said Ugyen.
“Tell me, please.”
“Well, you wouldn’t believe me if I told you.”
“Just tell me.”
“I want to become an army officer.” He grinned as he
fantasized how smart he would look in a camouflage
uniform with an epaulette of stars on his shoulders, “I
want to serve my country.”
“Army?” she said. “Why would an intelligent boy like
you join an army?”
“Because it’s my ambition.”
“Army rules are stringent,” she snapped. “Intelligent guys
like you should become a doctor.”
“What about you?”
“Well, I want to become a doctor,” she replied
sanctimoniously. “Doctors save lives.”
